New York, NY, October 6, 2006 – The American Bible Society today introduced the third issue of Elementz of Life™, a self-published magazine geared towards youth and young adults of the hip hop culture. Designed to empower young people and help them resolve some of life’s most challenging issues, this 80 page full-color, glossy magazine features real-life stories and expressions of faith and spirituality in today’s world.

“The American Bible Society has a heart for youth, and the Elementz of Life magazine is a creative way for us to reach them,” Elementz of Life manager Tonya Wilder said. “Today’s youth desperately need something to engage their interest as they wrestle with real-life issues. If our magazine can help them, then I believe we are achieving our goal.”

Jose Velez, former leader of the Spanish Cobras gang in Chicago, IL, is featured as the Elementz of Life cover story. Having joined a gang at age 13, Velez quickly rose through the ranks to become the leader of the Spanish Cobras. But after watching over 100 of his friends and family members die; after too many run-ins with the law; and after being shot in front of his home, Velez walked away from the gang life and turned to the Word of God. Today, Velez mentors young people on staying away from gangs and he provides advice to parents who suspect their children are succumbing to gang lifestyles.

Additional features stories include:

Jerome “Junkyard Dog” Williams – An interview with former NBA star Jerome Williams and how he keeps Christ in his life

How to Hang Up on a Booty Call – Phil Jackson, pastor of “The House” Covenant Church in Chicago, IL examines how young people can remain sexually pure by remaining true to God’s word

Living in the Culture and Finding Balance – Christian rapper and Pastor Tommy Kyllonen, also known as Urban D, talks about how we can we live in a culture like ours and truly maintain a solid relationship with our creator

Interview with Samantha Coleman – One-on-one interview with singer, writer, and former gangster rapper Samantha Coleman who discusses her decision to study the Word because she was “tired of a lukewarm relationship with God.”

With a circulation of 150,000 copies, Elementz of Life is distributed free of charge to Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America, correctional facilities, youth centers, churches, ministries and many other youth-oriented centers around the country that request copies.

"Elementz of Life is an excellent resource in the fight against gangs," said Fran Cook, Gang of One Director at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department in Charlotte, NC. "We have distributed thousands of copies of Elementz of Life in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. It is the artwork in Elementz of Life that often first attracts people to our gang prevention and intervention resource table but when they thumb through the pages and learn that it is a faith based magazine produced by the American Bible Society, they're hooked."

The third issue of Elementz of Life will be celebrated with an invitation-only launch party on October 6th at Safe Harbor in New York City. Well known faith-based hip-hop and R&B artists attending the party include Richie Righteous, Sean Slaughter, Q the Prophet, Mona J, Lavoisier, Keith, Todd Bangz, Switch’d, Precise, K-Drama, Jaz, Queen Octavia, Lazarus, and Scott Zion. During the party, the Bible Society will distribute copies of Conkrete Angels; Wisdom Cries Out In the Streets, a compilation CD featuring hip-hop and R&B hits by some of today’s most influential faith-based artists.
